Harare, Zimbabwe (News of the South)-President Josep Maria Bartomeu says that the giants will consider playing outside of the Spanish top-flight… which could see them apply to join the Premier League.
Over 90 per cent of people have voted for a referendum as the region is on course to become independent.
However, violent clashes led to Barca’s league match against Las Palmas on Sunday to be played behind closed doors after violent clashes followed the vote.
And now he has revealed the Barcelona board will be discussing where the club play their football in the future, potentially leading to the club moving to one of Europe’s other leading leagues.
He said: “This situation does not exist so far.
“But with regards to things that can happen in the future, it is something that the board of directors would discuss. It would be something to analyse calmly.
“If we discuss the subject intensely then obviously we will find the best solution. But if this [independence] happens, the board of directors will see.”
Speaking in a press release to explain the decision to play in front of an empty stadium on Sunday, he added: “Here at FC Barcelona we decided that we had to take some kind of measure to show our indignation to the world.
“There were many matters at stake and we discussed these with the different departments of the club: directors, executive, coaches and players.
“I must say that this was one of the most difficult decisions that I have ever had to make as Barça president.
“We very seriously considered the option of postponing the game, but we could not get the Professional Football League to approve our request.”
He also confirmed the resignations of vice-president Carles Vilarrubi and numerous other staff members had been accepted.
He added: “What we witnessed in our country yesterday was inadmissible.
“We demand respect for the people of Catalonia and we shall once again stand alongside its legitimate representatives.
“We Catalans have won the right to be heard.”-TheSun
